06-08-2019 Nick Zentner: Nick on the Rocks in Eastern WA

On Saturday, June 8th we had local TV celebrity Nick Zentner of Central Washington State University over to talk about his local PBS series entitled “Nick on the Rocks.”  These popular 5-minute videos highlight geologic features and processes in Washington.  The videos and slides focused on Eastern Washington, playground of the Missoula Floods and the Channeled Scablands they produced.  Because we’re expected a large crowd, the lecture was at the Chimacum HS Auditorium and we were pleased that 265 members showed up.  The lecture was wildly popular with lots of good feedback.

Geologic Excursion to Seattle;

David Williams, author of Stories in Stone (and a Geology Group lecturer)  led a second small group on a second walking tour of Seattle Building Stone. We saw all types of rock used in Seattle’s historic buildings and will learn about the geology and history of the stone and its use. This is a very popular walking tour and has been recently updated from his previous walks.  More information about this tour can be found on David’s webpage.

He can accommodate 15 persons per tour and the price is $20 per person (based on 15 persons).  We met at the Bainbridge Ferry around 10 am, walked on, and joined him in lower downtown.  The tour took about two hours, but some continued on for lunch or shopping in Seattle before returning on the Bainbridgr ferry. Registrants’ names and contact information were shared to facilitate carpooling from home to the ferry.

The date of the field trip was Saturday, May 11. The trip filled and we had wonderful weather, here are a few pictures and some words about ourMarch 18th trip: 

One of the most enjoyable and fascinating field trips I’ve been on. David Williams was trained as a geologist, but he has the soul of a storyteller. His explanations of the geological makeup of the stones used in creating some of Seattle’s iconic buildings was interesting, but the stories and historical background he added was the best part for a non-geologist like myself. Not a difficult or strenuous walk, with  some stops to look inside at amazing art deco lobbies. This is a field trip that will open your eyes to Seattle. DN

 

Michael, I would like to take this opportunity to comment on this weeks Geology Group field trip to Seattle.  The trip was, in short, outstanding.  Close to perfect.  The weather was pleasantly warm, the walk not overly long and last but not least was David Williams presentation.  David was cordial, unassuming and approachable while being extremely knowledgable. If you thought this trip was just about rocks (building stone), you were wrong.  It was that and much more.  David knows and presents the history of the buildings and the surrounding development in the context of historical growth of Seattle.  This trip was highly educational and a real pleasure.  Thanks to you for organizing and David for leading.  KN

04-13-2019 Christina Heliker — Working in the crater of Mount St. Helens, 1980-83

Christina Heliker began working at Mount St. Helens shortly after the cataclysmic eruption on May 18, 1980.  For the next several summers, she was in the field almost every day, working as part of the crew monitoring the ground deformation of the volcano.  Following the big blast on May 18th, there were five smaller eruptions in 1980 that produced pyroclastic flows. Using traditional (pre-GPS) surveying techniques, the “deformation crew” measured the inflationof the volcano’s flanks prior to each outbreak, as a means of predicting new activity.

By 1981, her fieldwork was mainly inside the crater, measuring the changes to the lava dome that preceded the numerous dome-building eruptions over the next several years.  At the same time, she was collecting samples of dome lava that contained inclusions of “foreign” rocks that were incorporated into the magma as it rose through the crust. These became the focus of her graduate work.  Ash bursts from the dome, swarms of micro-earthquakes, and constant rockfalls from the crater rim made it an exhilarating time.

Since returning to the Northwest, Christina has revisited the crater, hiking in as far as the terminus of the fast-growing glacier that has wrapped around dome. Her talk will include an update on current conditions at Mount St. Helens, nearly 40 years after the big eruption.

Christina Heliker is a geologist who spent most of her career working for the U.S. Geological Survey on active volcanoes.  Her first job with the USGS, however, was working on glaciers from an office in Tacoma.  When Mt. St. Helens erupted in May 1980, she quickly transferred to Vancouver, to what was soon to become the Cascades Volcano Observatory.  She worked there for the next four years while completing a Master’s degree at Western Washington University in Bellingham. In 1984, she moved to the USGS’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on the Island of Hawai`i, where she monitored the 35-year-long eruption of Kilauea until retiring. Christina returned to the Northwest in 2012, settling in Sequim, where she spends her time hiking and snowshoeing in the Olympic Mountains and working on her photography.
